Rachel Kadish's "I Was Here" chronicles the power of forgiveness and atonement to transcend evil. Kadish writes powerfully, beautifully, and convincingly, not only about victims of sexual abuse, but victims of parental abuse, who victimize others. Many of my friends were disappointed in this book. But it didn’t stop me. I’ve read and absolutely loved If I Stay and Where She Went. I added both of these books to my “true-book-love” shelf (I don’t do this easily). And I just wanted more of Gayle Forman’s writing. So I lowered my expectation a little and picked up I Was Here.

Forman's latest book is just as serious as her previous books, but somehow feels a bit different. It feels a little more mature. Gayle Forman broke out as one of the masters of young adult literature with 2009's If I Stay, a heartbreaking, but inspiring story that had a whole lot to say about the strength of the human spirit.
